More than 20.000 diabetes patients in Germany use an insulin pump. The programmable pump is a real advancement to most patients, because with this medical device they are able to batch the insulin more accurately. Thereby they can live their everyday life in a much more spontaneous and flexible manner. From a design point of view insulin pumps available today are hardly fulfilling the requirements an expensive medical device used all day is ought to fulfill. For this reason I have been motivated to develop a new and timely design in this project.
The slim and simple shape is the characteristic element of the insulin pump. It fits perfectly into trouser pockets or can be carried near the body. A special feature is the completely immersible luer-lock as well as the usage of lithium polymer batteries instead of two AAA batteries. The accumulator gets the power inductively by a magnetic charging device. The bended display features enough room for a clearly arranged interface with an integrated digital level indicator. The menu can be controlled with a shuttle-dial. The safety locked bolus button for individual and immediate insulin dose rates is placed on the bottom side.
